Sometimes you may run into problems when trying to connect to the Wi-Fi but it is more important to know what the problem is. By doing some Wi-Fi Troubleshooting, you may be able to easily address these problems and get back online even faster than you previously did before.

Troubleshooting Tips – starting with your router

Start with rebooting the router. Sometimes routers need the occasional reboot to function efficiently. All you have to do is unplug the router’s power cable, wait a while and then plug it back in. You can try the same with a separate modem. If the device has a power switch, try turning it off and then back on. Frequent reboots to the router means that the firmware may need to change. Installing alternative firmware may be the answer to the problem.

Also, make sure that the router is not overheated. Make sure that the vents are not blocked. If the vents are not blocked and overheating still occurs, remove the router from the current location. Also, do not place it on top of a tower PC. It heats up easily and can damage the router thus affecting the performance of the Wi-Fi.

You should ensure that the cables are pressed inproperly. This is the easiest solution and yet the most forgotten one. Check each end of the power cables to the router and modem, the cable between your router and modem, the cable between the modem and the wall socket, and each Ethernet cable plugged into the back of the router.

You can also try repositioning the router. Simple appliances like the microwave or large metallic objects can disrupt the noise to signal ratio. Also, some cordless phones and other devices which use external antennas can pose a problem. Also, position the router’s antenna vertically as it will provide the largest coverage area.

What’s Next ?

Try changing the wireless channel if you still encounter problems. If lots of wireless routers are nearby, this could lead to interference. To change the wireless channel, log into the admin panel for your router and look for the best wireless channel for your area (it should be one that is not heavily congested). Once you have selected this channel, your Wi-Fi signal should improve tremendously.

If nothing else works, try resetting the router to Factory Default Settings. This can be done by long-pressing the Reset pinhole button the back of the router depending on what type of router it is.

Finally, consider that it could be that the modem or router is broken or the Ethernet cables may be damaged and need to be replaced. There may also be a software issue if only one device is having problems with its network connection. At the end of the day, you may need a new router or modem which is a lot simpler and a lot less confusing than dealing with a faulty router or modem.

Are you frustrated when trying to connect to your Wi-Fi. It could be that you have a slow connection. But it may be more than that. Here are a few simple DIY tips to help improve your wifi when identifying the most common problems with Wi-Fi :

Router Placement

You may be too far from the router. If that is the case, move closer to the router. Try being in the same room as the router for a while and see if that makes a difference. If it doesn’t, try placing the router a bit higher, perhaps on a shelf away from other devices and place it in a central location in the home.

Reduced Internet Speed

There could also be a lack of bandwidth which can drastically slow down the connection. Try disconnecting any devices that aren’t currently being used from the Wi-Fi. You can also plug directly to the router using a Cat-5 Ethernet cable if there are multiple persons using the internet.

Be wary of the fact that someone may be also connected to your Internet. You should ensure that the network is secured at all times.

Interference

Your Wi-Fi is also affected by interference by other appliances which produce waves such as the microwave and even furniture can raise a problem.

For a stronger, connection, try to remove such objects away from the router. It can be due to leaving the settings unchanged which can lead to crowding of the default wires frequency channels. To fix this, perform a power cycle on the router.

Congested channels

You can manually select a different channel by logging into the admin panel. You can enable both frequencies (2.4GHz and 5GHz) if it is a dual-band router. It could be that the router is outdated and you may need a new one. Try to get a new router every two years to avoid further issues.

Hardware Issues

If it is that you cannot connect to the internet at all, there could be a slight glitch with the modem or router. Try unplugging the modem and router from power and wait up to a minute before connecting back to power. If the connection constantly drops and there has been a massive service outage, you may have to talk your Internet Service Provider.

Although several improvements have been made recently to Internet speed and Wi-Fi, you may still encounter slow internet speeds and connection problems with the Wi-Fi. This is due to the fact that Wi-Fi operates in unregulated portions of the radio spectrum and Wi-Fi networks currently operate like a “a weak radio station in a busy city market” when trying to tune in. To efficiently tune in and get online, here a few pointers to help solve those Wi-Fi problems:

1. Try Rebooting the Routers

This may be the simplest solution to your Wi-Fi issues. Just try unplugging the power cord,wait a few seconds and then reconnect, if there are multiple routers or wireless access points(WAPs), reboot them all. Consumer or cheap Wi-Fi gear may need to be rebooted every few weeks to ensure that it works effectively. You can also turn the Wi-Fi off and on again on the computer as it would force the system to rescan for available networks

2. You Can Also Change the Location of The Routers and Computers

Just changing the location to just some meters away can make a big difference. Try a higher and more central location. You should keep the router away from large metal surfaces as these act as energy sinks and obstruct Wi-Fi signals. Also, keep the router away from mirrors and other reflective surfaces as these also affect Wi-Fi signals.

3. Watch for Overheating

It is important that the vents of the router are not blocked by any other equipment placed on top of it. The router already possesses a poorly ventilated box and not keeping these vents open may result in strange behavior from the router.

4. Updating the Firmware

Firmware updates are often done to improve performance. You should always check if the firmware is up to date if you run into problems. You can also apply available patches especially when using new devices. But be warned! Firmware updates may introduce bugs into the system, so only update the firmware when you run into problems.

5. Use A Larger or External Antenna

Wi-Fi antennas are typically a few centimeters long on the router and internal on your device. If you are having problems with reception, you can always use a larger or external antenna. Some routers may offer removable antennas which should be easy to buy and replace. An external antenna can help to boost the noise to signal on a desktop or laptop with a metal case. You can also create a parabolic dish antenna by using a vegetable strainer and work accessories.

6. Forget Previously Saved Networks

Sometimes computers and mobile devices may run into problems even if they are connected to previous networks. The password may be the same but network hardware or encryption methods may change. The best way to resolve this matter is to let your device forget a previously saved network. It acts as a sort of refresh for your device. Once this is done, if you need to reconnect, you most definitely can!

7. Change the Wi-Fi channel

Signal connection may be a problem especially if you live in quite a populated are as many devices use both 2.4 GHz and 5.8GHz bands. You can try changing the broadcast channel of the router. You can try running your router in automatic mode which will easily assign a clear channel. If you are still encountering problems, try using a Wi-Fi monitor so that you can see what channels are being used and be able to choose a channel that’s much less crowded.

Try changing encryption methods by using another encryption method. Some of these methods are WEP, WPA, WPA2. Your password encrypts transmitted traffic so you can change the encryption method and see what works best. Try using WPA as it is a huge improvement from using WEP. WPA encryption may not be supported by older 802.11b equipment, so stick to WEP.

Improve Your Internet Speed

I’m pretty sure at some point, you have experienced a slow internet connection. It is the most frustrating event to encounter. Imagine waiting for a movie to load or playing a game online and the internet begins to lag. Here are several steps to improve your Internet speed: Try using a different browser. Sometimes it is the browser that’s causing things to move at a snail pace. As web pages become more sophisticated, you’ll need a quality browser to handle the number of processes and cut back on ads and other non-essentials. You can try Firefox, Google Chrome and Opera and see if it makes a difference. If it also helps, try removing unwanted add-ons, extensions and plugins as it slows down the time it takes for the web page to load. Also, try closing unused tabs as these may automatically refresh themselves and consume a lot of bandwidth.

The Router

Another reason for a slow internet connection may be due to the router. You may have to change your wireless to a different channel so that it doesn’t have to be weighed down by other routers nearby which are trying to broadcast on the same channel. You can scan the wireless networks to see which channel isn’t so congested. Then find your wireless connection in the list and then choose a channel that is not overburdened with many networks. You will need your modem/router’s IP address which can be found in the documentation for the router/modem and then choose an appropriate channel between 1-11.

Repositioning Your Router

You can also try repositioning your router by placing it in a central position where there is direct and unobstructed line between the computer/device and the router. Also, try to avoid interference from other wireless devices by removing devices such as cordless phones and other devices with an antenna.
>You can also try using an Ethernet cable for a faster connection or perhaps it is just time to get a new router which may be more up to your speed.

Test the Speed of Your Connection

Try optimising the Internet Service Package as your Internet Service Provider may be the source of your snail-paced connection. You can test the speed of your connection to determine approximately what speed the ISP is providing. Once you get the results, compare it with results from another computer. If both result turn out to be slow, contact your ISP. You can also upgrade to a better package for faster internet connection. You can ask the same provider for a deal or discounted upgrade in exchange for being a loyal customer. If they can’t do that, look for another ISP which may provide additional benefits for being a new customer.

Optimise Your Computer

You can try to optimise your computer by closing or removing programs that are hardly in use as these reduce the computer’s memory and thus reduce the speed of the connection. Also, check your computer for viruses and spyware as these also use a lot of memory which results in a slow connection. In addition to running the malware scan, ensure that you are using only one firewall. You can also defragment your disk which will improve the overall performance of the computer and speed up your connection. You may also have to make some upgrades to the computer such as updating the RAM for a faster connection or updating the OS. try a different operating system.

If this still doesn’t work or if your computer is over five years old, you may need a new computer. If a new computer seems too expensive, try using an older OS or using an OS that can be used through the browser.
Also, try to turn off your computer every night. Although most of us do not do this, it can make a big difference with regards to performance as leaving it in standby can reduce the memory of the machine and therefore reduce the speed of the internet.

Let’s just admit that we love the internet. There is so much to do and see online and so much to learn through Google. The good news is, there are two ways to get online. You can either use a wireless connection or a wired connection. So which is better – Home Wi-Fi vs Internet Modem ? To determine which one might be better for you, we have weighed the pros and cons of each.

Mobility

When it comes to mobility, wireless is the way. Wireless connections means numerous users can go online without physically connecting to the apparatus. As such you are not limited by a small number of ports. Plus, there are no wires or cables involved thus having the advantage over the wired systems which would require you to be as close to the modem as possible and which may need to be replaced when they no longer work. Also, wireless connections mean that there are no bundles of cables around the home which can be quite an eyesore and look quite messy and can take up quite a lot of space.

It also allows multiple devices and mobile devices to use the same internet connection and to move around the network area without hassle. Finally wireless systems are more cost effective as less apparatus is required.

Wired Networks Provide the Faster Speed

However, wired networks provide the faster speed as it provides up to one gigabit per second when connected. This makes file sharing a lot easier and quicker than using wireless systems. Connectivity and speed may be an issue for wireless systems can begin to slow down when multiple devices and users connect and this can be a huge problem especially when you want to watch your favourite show or want to download a game or some music. Also, as convenient as a wireless system is, it can be prone to interference by external factors such as furniture and appliances that also broadcast signalsthus reducing the bandwidth. This means that you may have to move closer or reposition the apparatus for best results with a wireless system. Finally as wires are the source of connection, there is little to no interference with wired networks.

Security

Also with regards to security wired networks have the upper-hand. As you need to be physically connected to access the network, it is highly unlikely that anyone can hack into the system. In comparison, WiFi networks broadcast signals, which gives hackers easier access. If you lack experience, it is simpler to physically connect to the internet. Setting up wireless networks is complicated.

Choosing to get online, whether through a wireless or a wired connection, depends on your internet needs. Once you know your preferences it would be easier to choose which setup works for you so that you can use the internet to its’ full advantage.

Data Cable Installations

Data Cable Installations

We had a call from Paul Sheehan from Kings Cross. He owns a cleaning company focusing on high rise buildings. His company accepts jobs cleaning the sides of high-rise buildings. His company had just transferred to a new office without power points and Data and phone outlets where they wanted them. He urgently needed some Data Cable Installations.

It was a real time-sensitive job. He rang me on a Monday and told me that they were moving to the new office on the following weekend. As such, we managed to check their new office quickly and gave him  an estimate of how much the work would cost. As he had recieved clear upfront costing, it was easy for him to go ahead with the job. This allowed us to start the job on Thursday. It was two days worth of work.

We got all the Data outlets and cabling installed on their workstations. Power points were also installed everywhere, with extra circuits. Next were the installation of patch panels and ensuring that the telephone system was all pathed up to wherever he needed the outlets to go. We were ready for his IT group to start setting up by Friday and we worked with them to make sure everything was as they wanted. Our portion of the job was finished by Friday afternoon. The IT guys kept working over the weekend, and by Saturday they got everything done.

Focusing on Customer Satisfaction on Data Cable Installations

I spoke to them on Monday and he told me that everything went smoothly. He told me that he was really happy with our service. We ran the cabling to ensure everything was installed properly. It is important to run the Diablo cabling correctly and use good quality iJ 45 mex. Cat 5 cable is good if you are doing a large video transfer or you are transferring lots of dialogue between your computers and your servers. However, if you really need it to be super fast, then you can use Cat 6 instead, but to be hones, the extra expense involved is not worth it, unless you are transferring really large data and you need them to be transferred quickly.

With regards to his power points, we set it up on a server UPS, so that if the power went down, he would not lose all the stuff that have not been saved on his server. We put them on separate circuits and we had safety switches to protect his employees  and surge-protected outlets to make sure it won’t break any computer stuff if there’s a surge on that area.
