Inspect floor coverings – warped timber floors, lifting vinyl, or sagging carpets can indicate moisture coming from below. These signs usually appear over time and are more noticeable after heavy rain or in the cooler months.

Look around external vents – Are they blocked by garden beds, debris, or paving? Subfloor vents should be clear and unobstructed to allow airflow.

Check for signs of rising damp such as blistering paint, damp patches on walls, or salt deposits (efflorescence). These are often linked to subfloor humidity.

If it’s safe, you can inspect the subfloor space through an access hatch. Look for pooled water, fungus, or a lack of crossflow (airflow from one side to another).
