Why Overloads Happen
Overloads happen when you push a circuit beyond what it’s built to handle. Plug in too many high-power, “hot” appliances—like kettles, toasters, dishwashers, or dryers—and you’re asking for trouble. Most home circuits are rated for 16–20 amps, but each of those “hot” appliances can draw 8–10 amps on its own. Add a third device, and the breaker is almost guaranteed to trip. This issue can get worse in winter when you bring extra heaters into the mix. So is your heater overloading your power circuits ? Each heater adds to your load, and those amps add up fast. The best move? Be smart with heating:
Use a small heater to warm one room only and close the doors to keep the heat in.
Choose fan heaters over slower alternatives like oil heaters —they heat faster and often use less power.
Add a simple timer so the heater isn’t running constantly; this reduces stress on the circuit and saves you money.
If you know you’ll be running multiple high-power devices, switch the heater off temporarily to avoid tripping the breaker.
