Connect to Home Wi-Fi Remotely

Who wouldn’t want to access their home network when they are far away from home? Connecting to the home network can make things so much simpler as it allows you to remotely access your music collections, game serves, file stores and much more.

Dynamic DNS

To begin the process of connecting to your home network remotely, you will first need a Dynamic DNS.A Dynamic DNS (Dynamic Domain Name System) is just an address used online which makes it easy and simple to find your home network as it assigns a memorable name to the IP address. Web page, resource and FTP has an IP address which is its’ particular numerical address but it can be quite complicated to remember all of those numbers, so the DDNS just simplifies this process of remembering the IP address, which can change quote frequently.

You are going to need a host for the DDNS as it will store the necessary information about the DDNS.DDNS hosts such as No-I, Dynu Systems and Zonomi DNS Hosting are. These will allow you to add a custom name to the home IP address and are generally free and should be able to meet your basic DDNS needs. You may have to pay attention to the specific features if you have specific needs such as adding a complete domain name instead of a DDNS-brand name or you would like to add multiple sub-domains for different things such as games and music.

You will also need a router that supports the DDNS services as you can plug in the information from your DDNS provider and the router can then update the address. Once your router is on, it automatically updates the address. Therefore, the DDNS entry will always be updated and will allow you to connect to the network with ease. Please check the router’s administration page to determine if you should use this service as not all routers support DDNS services. In that case, you will need a local client, which is an application that checks your IP address and home phone to the DDNS provider and then uses this information to update the DDNS records. The local client should be used on a frequently used computer which is generally connected to the home network to simply the changes that may occur once the IP address changes.

Dynamic DNS Account

Once you have acquired all the necessary tools, you will need to sign up for a DDNS account and then direct it to the home network and automate it to update entries regularly. When you have finished creating and confirming the account, log into the DDNS account, then look for the Control Panel and then look for “DDNS Services” and then click on it. You are then going to look for the “Add” button and click it. Then enter the specific hostname and domain name in the fields marked “Host” and “Top Level”. Click the “Add” button to add the entered fields to the account. You can also use your own domain name, by entering the necessary information in the field on the right hand and following the instructions that follow. Ensure that the IP address in the DDNS entry is correct and it should be if you are working from your home network. You will have to change it if you are not connected to the home network. Then click save to store this information to the system.

Configure the Router

Once you have set up the account, you will then need to configure the router so that it automatically receives updates from the DDNS. You will need to look at the documentation for your specific router or firmware to determine where the settings for the DDNS are. It can normally be found under Setup and it may be disabled. You should see a drop down menu for the DDNS Service. Scroll down until you see “Custom” and select it. You will need to add the DDNS server and the username and password associated with that account and the hostname that you have decided on. If in doubt as to the DDNS server, check the documentation for the particular service you have selected. Once you have filled in this information, click “Save” and the automation process should be complete.

Update the IP and Dynamic DNS

If the router isn’t DDNS friendly, you will need your PC to update the IP and DDNS information for you. You can easily download the PC-based updater from the control panel of the DDNS provider. Choose the one that is appropriate for your Operating System, then download and install the application. You are going to let the program run by clicking on the “Run” button and once it has finished loading, enter the username and password for the DDNS and then click “Save”. It will then automatically connect and update the IP address. Then click “Close”. The PC-based updater should then handle the updates automatically.
